I’m very grateful to and flattered by Rachael and David who have opened a new gallery and given me my first solo exhibition for their first exhibition in their new business.

Rachael and David Rickwood are getting to the art of the matter after quitting their previous jobs to make their dream of running an art gallery come true.

The husband-and-wife team have launched Rickwood’s in Whitley Bay following a year living abroad in Doha, Qatar, to save up enough money to fund the business.

David, originally from Wallsend, and Rachael, a former art teacher at Marden Bridge Middle School in Whitley Bay, sourced everything for the Station Road gallery online and even found their first exhibiting artist, Carolynne Coulson, of North Yorkshire, via her shop on the internet marketplace Artfinder.

David said: “Setting up an art gallery has been a life-long dream of mine and Rachael’s.”

“I used to work in advertising, but we’ve wanted to start our own business in the north east for a long time.

“We both love Whitley Bay, and this feels like an exciting time for the area, with the recent announcement of the Government’s £36m Coastal Communities Fund.

“It is our aim to foster an artistic community in North Tyneside and to encourage people to feel more connected to local artists, and also to get involved with art in their area.”

Carolynne Coulson added: “As the global online platform for art, Artfinder supports 6,000 artists in 97 countries. That a couple from the North East should find me through my Artfinder shop online while living in Doha feels very appropriate somehow. I am delighted to have this opportunity for my first-ever solo exhibition and look forward to working with Rickwoods in the future.”
