This painting took quite a while to paint, it has many layers! it has had people, and things appearing and then disappearing throughout the process. When it began to resolve I started to think like I always do about what to call it, and immediately the name “The cat came back” fit perfectly even though I wasn’t sure why. But as I painted on I thought about all the changes it had undergone and I remembered with the conscious part of my mind something which the unconscious part clearly knew all along. The first version of the painting, now under many layers of paint had a cat not that far away from where this one is. That is the reason for the name of this painting.  The cat came back!
